Scope of task  Students are to carry out four (4) practical investigations and write  a report on each investigation. Each report should be approximately 350 words. The practical activities will be based on two (2) of the following (See Study Areas 1 and 2):  investigation of Mendelian ratios as observed through the  first-hand collection of experimental data OR   modelling DNA, OR   DNA extraction And one (1) from each of the following (See Study Area 3):  study of patterns of evolution through the use of previouslycollected data (1) AND a study of fossils(1) 
Each report will:  outline the concept being investigated, providing sufficient background and proposing aims and/or hypotheses   describe the methods used in the investigation  state the main results and present and display summative data (means etc.) collected during the investigation  evaluate and interpret data and make conclusions  critically analyse experimental technique and allow for suggestions on improvements. Each practical exercise is conducted during class in one lesson and the report should be written up in class in  the subsequent lesson. There will be no “out of class” component. Students may work in pairs or threes (this  will be dependent upon the availability of equipment in the provider school). Assessment Task – Total marks: 20. Each practical report is equally weighted and worth 7.5% of the final student mark. Each of the four (4) practical reports is to be assessed individually using this assessment rubric for practical work
