Question
DISCUSSIONS
MODULE 1
Module 1 Discussion

The textbook Compensation Management in a Knowledge-Based World spends several pages defining important legislation that affects employment in the U.S. (see pp. 81-105). Choose 1 piece of legislation (Act or Amendment) from one of the following sections:

Wage & Hour Legislation
Pension & Benefits Legislation
Anti-discrimination Legislation
Legislation for Public Employees

Briefly explain the legislation in your own words, discuss whether it has achieved the intended effect on employee’s rights and compensation, and explain how you might recommend strengthening this legislation. Incorporate applicable current events into your discussion. Be sure to cite your sources, if any.

Specifically:

What points would you add to your peers’ discussions to support their positions?
Where do you and your peers disagree?
How practical were your peers’ discussions of how to strengthen the laws? Would these plans be difficult to implement in the “real world?”

Remember in order to receive the full credit for the discussion you must provide a complete response and then you must respond (provide feedback) to two other responses provided by your classmates. In your feedback to your classmate you must clearly state what you found to be beneficial and whether or not there was other areas that they could have mentioned to make their response stronger.

If anyone has any questions concerning how to respond to the requirement do not hesitate to contact me.
MODULE 2
The textbook Compensation Management in a Knowledge-Based World provides a table that outlines the dimensions and components of compensation (see pp. 18-19). Choose a dimension of compensation (Ex.: Pay for Time Not Worked) and discuss whether at least 2 specific components of that dimension are standard offerings from most U.S. employers. If so, why; if not, why not?

Specifically:

What points would you add to your peers’ discussions to support their positions?
Where do you and your peers disagree?
Do your work experiences support or conflict with how your peers described specific components of compensation? In what way?
MODULE 3
Henderson’s (2006) textbook describes controversies around the use of job descriptions in the modern workplace, calling their use “a relic of the old industrial engineering world” and “a barrier to improved worker performance and organizational productivity” (p. 141). One of the main questions Henderson raises is whether job descriptions should be written specifically for one or a small group of job holders in the same job title, or if job descriptions should be written in broad, general terms that cover a larger number of employees across many job titles and work groups.

Which do you think is the “best” way to write job descriptions? Why? Be specific in your response to make a case for why the way you choose is better.

Specifically:

What points would you add to your peers’ discussions to support their positions?
Where do you and your peers disagree? What concerns do you have with what your peers consider the “best” way?
What could you suggest to your peers to convince them that the other style of job description is better?
MODULE 4
Choose one of the job evaluation techniques described in the textbook in Chapters 8 & 9. Discuss the pros and cons of that technique in your own words. How would you envision using that technique to establish comparable worth for your own job (or a job with which you are very familiar)?

Specifically:

What pros or cons would you add to your peers’ discussions of the job evaluation technique they chose?
Do you think your peers were realistic in their discussion of how that technique could be used to evaluate their jobs? Why or why not? What might be a better job evaluation technique?
MODULE 5
You just got an email from Jane, an acquaintance of yours who is a sales supervisor with another company. She writes:

“I supervise a salesperson named John. I just found out (don’t ask me how) that he makes more money than me – even though I’m basically his manager! And I’m not talking about commissions, I’m talking base pay! Hello?!? That burns me up…typical male-dominated company!”

You are the compensation expert; how would you respond (professionally, please) to Jane? In your response, take a stand on the issue of pay grade overlap. Is this a useful practice? Why or why not? What alternatives (if any) do you believe are more practical? Be prepared to support your answer with evidence from the textbook or outside sources.

Specifically:

What points would you add to your peers’ discussions to support their positions?
Where do you and your peers disagree? What information did your peers overlook in their responses to this issue?
How would you have responded differently regarding the issue of pay grades?
MODULE 6
Performance measurement is so important to compensation. Now it is your turn to develop a performance appraisal system. Propose and briefly describe a system for your own job (or a job that you are very familiar with) that includes 1) multiple appraisers, 2) various times for appraisal, 3) multiple appraisal instruments.

Be sure to specifically address the following:

What is the job being appraised?
Who will be the appraisers?
When will the appraisals be conducted?
What instruments will be used in the appraisals?
What role do reliability and validity play in a performance appraisal system?
Specifically:

Do you believe your peers’ performance appraisal systems were realistic? Why or why not?
How would you have responded differently regarding the issue of performance appraisal?
What input would you add to your peers’ performance appraisal systems to make them more effective?
MODULE 7
Module 7 Discussion

Choose an organization that you are interested in and familiar with (this may include your current job). Discuss how this particular organization currently uses short term and long term incentives to motivate employees. Be sure to address the following:

What type of organization is it? (if you prefer, you may withhold the name of the organization)
List and briefly describe the short term incentives the organization offers.
List and briefly describe the long term incentives the organization offers.
How are these incentives used to motivate employees? (Are they effective? Why or why not?)
Suggest several specific ways that new or different incentives would further motivate employees and benefit the organization as a whole.
Use references from both the textbook and outside sources to support why you think your suggestions would be benefit this organization.
Specifically:

How realistic were your peers’ suggestions for added incentives? Why?
What were the best suggestions that your peers made?
What suggestions would you add to your peers’ incentive plan?
What information did your peers overlook in their responses to this issue?
MODULE 8
Module 8 Discussion

Part 1:
Provide a summary of the three areas that you found interesting during the class and how you may be able to use this information to help you in your future endeavors, then provide a summary of the three areas that you didn’t find interesting.

Part 2:
Take this time also to provide any feedback concerning the class and any recommendations that you have that may improve it.
ASSIGNMENTS
MODULE 1
HR Application 1: “Selling It”

Imagine that you are the compensation specialist for a large manufacturing organization in the U.S. Your organization makes and sells a product (YOU get to choose what the product is) in the global marketplace. Develop a compensation package for the position of “Salesperson” in your organization.

Expect to take approximately 2-3 pages written in APA format (double-spaced, 12 point font) to complete this assignment. Your work will be graded on completeness, clarity, originality, interest, APA formatting, grammar, spelling and punctuation. (see HRA written assignment grading rubric for more information).

Be sure to address the following:

What is the product that your organization makes and sells? Be specific.
What are the major issues that should be considered as part of your organization’s compensation strategy? For example, how will your product, the nature of sales jobs, and global competition affect your decisions?
What dimensions and elements of compensation will be most important to this job in your organization? Why?
Construct a short email that you could send to a newly-hired employee providing a brief overview of initial compensation and benefits. For example, would a “Salesperson” at your organization be paid salary only, salary plus commission incentives, hourly only? What kinds of pay differentials could they expect for shift work? Will any or all employees receive benefits? Do your best to be realistic in what you would expect to offer and explain the decisions you made.
Assuming your answer is correct, this is how you will be graded. You will receive 0pts for an incorrect answer.

MODULE 2
HR Application 2: Strategize!

Imagine you are a Compensation Analyst at a large manufacturing organization. The CEO recently came to your boss, the Director of Compensation, to determine how to restructure compensation for certain employees. The CEO wants to make sure that compensation aligns with the following organizational strategies:

1) Continue to make a quality product that our consumers will always choose over our competitors in the industry.

2) Keep production and overhead costs down by working smarter, not harder.

3) Expand into new markets across the U.S.

4) Hire the best people and support them as they develop in their careers.

Put together a proposal memo addressed to the Director of Compensation that shows how the total compensation package can support these strategies.

The 3 specific positions you should focus on are: production associates (who assemble the products in the manufacturing plant), line supervisors (who directly supervise the production associates), and floor managers (who supervise the entire production process at the plant).

Be sure to address the following:

What elements of compensation and non-compensation will be important in supporting the 4 organizational strategies above? Why?
Will organizational hierarchy play a role in your proposal? How?
What challenges did you have aligning compensation strategy with organizational strategy? Be specific.
What aspects of your proposal do you think your Director or the CEO will support vs. reject? Why?
Expect to take approximately 2-3 pages written in APA format (double-spaced, 12 point font) to complete this assignment. Your work will be graded on completeness, clarity, originality, interest, APA format, grammar, spelling and punctuation. (see HRA written assignment grading rubric for more information).

MODULE 3
HR Application 3: Analyze!

HR Application

Choose a job that you are interested in (for this assignment, you may NOT choose your own job). Conduct an informal job analysis on that job title and submit a brief narrative report according to the steps below:

Determine what job title you will analyze
Look up the job title on O*NET to learn as much as you can about it
see Henderson, 2006, p. 133
Interview at least 2 people who are knowledgeable about the job:
1 incumbent
1 additional person (can be supervisor/manager or incumbent)
Work with the incumbent to list the 5-10 most important and frequently performed tasks he or she does on the job
Observe the incumbent performing the job for at least 30 minutes.
Write a brief job description for the job title
Write a minimum of 5 specific task statements or duties performed on the job
Write a minimum of 5 specific KSAOs necessary to perform the job
Describe what challenges you encountered during this process
Describe what you would you do differently if you had more time/resources to complete this job analysis
Expect to take about 2-3 pages written in APA format (double-spaced, 12 point font) to complete this assignment. Your work will be graded on completeness, clarity, originality, interest, APA format, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

MODULE 5
HR Application 4: Check the Market!

Visit any 2 websites that offer salary survey information and compare your position/salary with what is offered in those reports (you can either do this for your present position, one you have held in the past, or one you are very familiar with). Henderson (2006) notes several sources in your textbook: the U.S. Department of Labor, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Watson Wyatt Data Services/ECS, the Economic Research Institute (ERI), William M. Mercer Incorporated, and Organization Resources Counselors, Inc. (ORC) are all useful sites.

Submit a summary report that addresses the following (you do not need to report your actual salary information):

· Which sites did you visit? How useful and user-friendly were those sites?

· Where did the survey information come from? How was it collected?

· What is the title of the position you are examining?

· What is the title of the position on the sites that is most similar?

· What is the reported minimum and maximum level for the position?

· What is the reported midpoint for the position?

· In your experience, how does the actual salary compare?

· In your opinion, what data or information missing from the reports?

· What information in the reports surprised you?

Expect to take approximately 2-3 pages written in APA format (double-spaced, 12 point font) to complete this assignment. Your work will be graded on completeness, clarity, originality, interest, APA format, grammar, spelling and punctuation. (see HRA written assignment grading rubric for more information).

MODULE 6
HR Application 5: Team Players!

This is a collaborative assignment. Form teams of 2-3 students to complete this HR Application. Yes, it is a team assignment about teams!

Nearly everyone seems to agree that being a good team player is critical to today’s organizations. Find at least 2 outside sources (an outside study or peer-reviewed journal article is best) and list what the author(s) describes as the major knowledge, skills, and competencies required of people in teams.

Be sure to address the following:

Summarize the information proposed about teams in the articles you read.
What team behaviors would you look for if you were in charge at your own organizations?
How would you measure team behavior at your own organizations?
Specifically, how would you reward the demonstration of team-based behaviors in your organizations?
Expect to take approximately 2-3 pages written in APA format (double-spaced, 12 point font) to complete this assignment. Your work will be graded on completeness, clarity, originality, interest, APA format, grammar, spelling and punctuation. (see HRA written assignment grading rubric for more information).
