Activity — Case study
You can discuss in class the following de-identified case.
Carol and Glenn live in Perth, Western Australia, and have been looking
after their grandchildren—Mia, aged six, and Luke, three— since the
children were removed from their parents by welfare agencies two years
ago. Carol is 54 and Glenn is 56.
We’re from England originally, but we’ve been here for 19 years and had
seven children of our own. We’ve had our grandchildren for two years. They’re
my son’s children. At first we only thought it would be for a while – we were
given custody after they were removed from their parents by children’s
services because they were being neglected and nobody else could take them.
Our son still lives in WA and he’s still with the children’s mother. They’ve got
another child on the way. They want custody, but they both have substance
abuse problems.
The children’s mother is Aboriginal, and I’m keen for them to maintain links to
their original culture. They’d been staying with an auntie on the mother’s side,
but she couldn’t manage them. Because they have such a large extended
family on that side, I felt it was probably wrong that children’s services asked
me to have them, and for a while I was worried the family might come and try
to take them back. But nobody’s ever been near me, so I feel quite safe with
them now.
Between 2006-07, there were 14,000 grandparent families caring for children, 8,050
of which were raising grandchildren under 15 years.
• What is your response?
• What would be the issues of parenting for the over 55’s? (e.g., Financial
disadvantage, employment, housing, mental and physical health, relationship and
social issues, access to support).

“One way to gauge how CF lung disease might feel is to breathe for a while through a
short length of garden hose. After a short time, you will feel an increasing urgency to
breathe more than you are able to – you will probably make increasing efforts to move
more air in and out of the hose, but your lungs cannot do that, no matter how much
effort is put into it.
Now imagine this feeling of “not enough breath“, starting off imperceptibly, steadily
increasing, never halting or reversing as you grow up through your teenage years.
Expecting to enjoy life as it develops you are faced with an increasing amount of mucus
and fluid trapping in your lungs that you relentlessly attempt to cough out to be able to
