Module2 Narrative and Descriptive Writing Narrative Essay For the case you will write a three-four page, double spaced, narrative that tells a story, and you will use what you learned about description to help you bring the two kinds of writing together. Your narrative can be about any topic, but you will want to choose something that gives you plenty of information and ways to describe and tell the story. Consider using readings in the Background Info section of the module to help you think more about narrative. Take notes on what your senses tell you. What do you hear, see, or smell, for example? Choose something that you saw during your observation and write a two-page description of the moment in time. You will want to consider how the essay appeals to the emotions, the credibility, and the logic of the readers. You will consider how and where the author appeals to the emotions of a reader. Consider whether the author makes sense or has logical points. Evaluate whether or not you believe what Brady says remains true today. This essay should illustrate your knowledge of the rhetorical appeals, description, and evaluation. Module 5 -Home Reading and Writing about Arguments Welcome to the fifth case assignment. In this assignment, you will write a four-five page, double spaced, argument about any topic you would like. Controversial topics are often what people look for to write about, but using local issues, issues you are familiar with, or issues less controversial (whether to use a real Christmas tree or a fake one, for example) work just as well. Sometimes, using less controversial topics are easier to work with than highly charged topics, but in any case, choose a topic you already know something about. The focus here will be on how well you can present your argument in writing. Use the following scheme to help you. Assignment: Write a four-five page, douple spaced, argumentative essay. Think carefully about the audience for each. Use the scenario below. While browsing online, you found a “help wanted” ad for “your dream job,” working for the world-famous MegaCorp. (Before going any further, stop and think about what “your dream job” would consist of. Have fun with this! Write some notes about the job, and refer to them as you proceed.) Per instructions in the ad, you immediately contacted MegaCorp by phone. The person in HR advised you to send them your resume by snailmail, accompanied by a cover letter of not more than two pages. In the cover letter, you should introduce yourself, and explain why you’re the person they’re looking for. Needless to say, the letter must be perfect with respect to grammar, spelling and style. First impressions are important! This letter is the first part of your assignment. Next, you have to prepare your family and friends for the possible change in your life. If you get the job, you’ll have to relocate to another city, 1,000 miles away. Write a one-page email to a Significant Other (mother, father, sibling, friend — take your pick) explaining the job, why you’re applying for it, and why it would be worth the move. This email is the second part of your assignment. Next, you have to get a day off your present job, to meet a representative of MegaCorp at a nearby location. Write a one-page email to your boss, asking for a day off. Explain the job, and descirbe the opportunity if offers. For the purposes of this exercise, you can assume: (1) Your boss needs you, and giving you a day off would be difficult for her. (2) Your boss, being honest, has advised you that your present job is a dead end (perhaps because you’re about to leave the military). She has urged you to find something else, because… (3) Your boss is also a friend. This email is the third part of the assignment. Expectations You have three small separate assignments that can be included in one document. Please label each assignment properly. You will submit a two-page assignment and two one-page assignments as described above. Consider your audience when writing. Make your argument by using your personal strengths and weaknesses, abilities and expectations, and the characteristics of the (imaginary) job. Module 5 Demonstrate the ability to write a logical and persuasive argument. Demonstrate breadth and depth of understanding of the assigned topic in writing. Modular Objectives: In this module you will: 1. Participate in a threaded discussion in which you will reflect on course concepts 2. Prepare and submit a self-reflective essay To close out this course, please proceed to the Module Six threaded discussion forum and then the self-reflective essay task addressing the items noted below. Your module 6 task: You are to prepare a reflective essayin which you address each of the following items: 1. Descriptions of how you feel you improved your knowledge, skills, abilities, and yourself in this session through this course. 2. Evaluation of the work you did during the session for the class and explanations of ways you could have performed better. 3. Topics you have identified that you did not understand or were not successful in trying to implement and suggestions you may have about how to improve the course material on those topics. 4. Ways you might measure the future effects of what you have learned in this course or your future progress/improvement; 5. State whether you achieved the course objectives (listed on the module 4 home page and course syllabus page) This Self Reflective Essay is a REQUIRED course component (but not part of your final grade). You need to upload the essay in the corresponding area of CourseNet. The purpose of self-evaluation is to reflect upon what one has learned or how one has performed as compared with one’s expectations or goals. The conclusion of this course offers a good opportunity for such reflection and self-analysis, through the Reflective Essay. We really do value these reflective essays significantly.
