Assignment details:

Scenario:You are the Assistant Director of Operations for a chain of independent living facilities for older adults. You recently met with your manager to discuss the recent decline in resident retention at one of your largest facilities. He asked you to conduct an immediate site visit and determine what might be causing residents to leave.

When you arrive at the facility, you talk to staff and quickly determine that employee morale is low. Turnover is high and employees are working more hours than they should due to a staff shortage. There is a distinct deficiency in skills and knowledge among the newer employees, which places additional strain on the more experienced individuals. Communication within and between departments is lacking. Finally, there are few incentives in place to encourage higher levels of performance.

You also interview residents and come to the conclusion that they are being negatively impacted by the issues affecting the staff. The residents feel there is a lack of community within the facility. There are few planned activities and there is a disorganized feeling throughout the facility. The residents do not feel a connection with the staff and do not believe they care about the residents.

Based on your findings, your manager asks you to work with the onsite Manager to develop a proposal that will focus on employee motivation, staff training and development, building relationships among staff members, and building relationships between staff and residents. The proposal’s goal is to improve staff performance/productivity and increase employee satisfaction, which will in turn result in the organization’s goal to improve resident retention and satisfaction.

Perform the following tasks:

• Be sure to read the entire scenario carefully and take notes before your start.

• Using what you learned in this week’s readings and lecture, write a plan to improve employee performance/productivity and job satisfaction at the facility.

o Begin with an explanation of the link between motivation and performance

oInclude at least four different activities or changesthat you recommend implementing in order to improve employee motivation and performance

oExplain the anticipated results of each activity or change, including how it will address one or more of the focus areas (motivation, training & development, and/or relationship-building)

oEnd with a discussion of how the changes will support the organization’s goal to improve resident retention and satisfaction.
