apply knowledge about the impact of students’ socioeconomic status, race,

teaching.
TSL 605 Responsive Teaching Paper spring 2014.
In
this paper I analyzed Cristina Igoa’s book entitled the inner world of the immigrant
Child. The purpose for this assignment is to identify many aspects of
responsive instruction. The author portrays the different stories of some
immigrant children. She said that“these students come from different cultures
and became a coincidence in a new culture” (Igoa, 2010). The writer portrayed
to us how she facilitated many obstacles which were in front of these students.
After she provided all the facilities,Igoa was able to make herstudent an
effective in the new community.
2. A.1. Cultural values: Understand and apply knowledge about
cultural values and beliefs in the context of teaching and learning ESL.
ITSL 607: Mini-Ethnography: Libyan Culture spring 2013

. In
TSL 607, we were asked to do a presentation about a country and culture of our
choice. The purpose forthis task is a deeper understanding about the new
culture. The Country that I chose was
Bosnia. My presentation included family, religion, food, dress, music,
education and pets.
Introduction
My
point of view, Culture is a broad term and difficult confined to specific
points. Therefore, when I read about the culture, some anthropologists and
sociologists define the concept of human culture as the behavior of learning that
is acquired by individuals as members of groups living in the same society. Therefore, Altamira define the culture “
Culture or civilization, taken in its wide ethnographic sense, is that complex
whole which include knowledge, brief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other
capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.” (Moore, 2009) From
this point, we must respect all culturesbecause every human society has a
system of behavior which is governed by the standards and these standards may
be different from society to another. On the other hand, drew my attention,
through the first domain (language) and the second domain (culture) I found that
there is a strong relationship between them because children acquire the
culture of community by language. Thus leads us to say that we can’tconvey the
paralyzing of fear about a new culture, in contrast, this little boy he will
never understand the new language.
Variation
of human cultures widely in the ground produces to us this cultural diversity
in religious, levels and society. For
this reason, we can say that culture is an essential component in education and
it is an integral part of the human personality. Teachers and educatorsmust
accept the student with his or her culture.“Children have innate wisdom. They
often let us know what they need – if we could only listen and hear what they
are saying by their words, artwork, and behavior.” (Igoa, 1995) Furthermore, we
must enhance their culture in many of aspects life. My point of view, difference
cultures enriches lesson in class because it help the rest of the students to
discover a lot of things in the other culture by searchingor askingother student.
On the other hand, cultural barriers often are an obstacle to the student to
learn. Therefore, the teacher must break these barriers and create a suitable
environment for the student to learn.
2. B.4. Individual characteristics and learning: Understand and
apply knowledge about the impact of students’ socioeconomic status, race,
religion, class, national origin, disability, and gender on learning and
teaching.
In
this paper I analyzed Cristina Igoa’s book. The book was very useful,
especially for the teacher who wants to teach the English language with a lot
of different cultures. I learned from this assignment how the teacher can be an
important factor to facilitate the obstacles in front of his students such as
culture shock.
It
is important for the teacher to know some background of their students because
their socioeconomic status, race, religion, class, and national origin can all
have an impact on their learning experience. Their gender and whether they have
a kind of disability are factors that influence their learning. The book represents the experiences of
uprooting, culture shock, and adjustment to a new culture and country. It also
portrays cultural and academic interventions that assist the student in
transitioning from one culture to another.
As a
future teacher, I believe that the original culture of the student must not
neglect because they would feel rootless. For that reason, I think that
difference cultures of the students should be somehow incorporated in the
curriculum. They can be in the form of games, or presentations. For example,
every session students can prepare a presentation about a country of one their classmates.
Such tasks are very informing for both students and teachers. Students will
gain new information and knowledge and teachers’ knowledge about foreign
cultures would be extended and this will help them how to deal with students
from other countries.
2. A.1. Cultural values: Understand and apply knowledge about
cultural values and beliefs in the context of teaching and learning ESL.
These assignments seeks to spread
cultural ideas between the peoples of the world because it helps to exchanges
the cognitive and cultural between peoples. The knowledge of the teacher about
his student’s cultures is essential element to learn how to deal with all
students. This assignment reflected to me many new countries and the way they
think and behave. In the other hand,
Understanding cultural values is beneficial for students and teachers because
it can avoid errors that could happen in education process. For example, the Islamic
culture prohibits a man(who doesn’t belong to her family) shake handa Muslim woman.
This situation happened at ALI between men from Chinese and girl from Saudi
Arabia, when I observed one class to do research paper. This situation caused
embarrassment for both students and teacher. But if the teacher employed
cultural exchange in the class, she could avoid such as this problem.
Cultural knowledge not only merely transfers
information between students but it can be an effective element to enhance
skill of English language. For example, the teacher can open the discussion
between students about their cultures. In this case, the teacher can enhance
the speaking skill. Or the student can write a letter for his or her family
about a new culture that he or she learned. “When the child is able to own his
or her cultural roots, he can begin to “transplant” success fully without
shutting off or destroying his original cultural self.” (Igoa, 1995) From this point, teacher can make the
framework of culture within his strategies in teaching to increases his
awareness of other cultures. Personally,
this method in teaching is beneficial for me and I would surely use it in the
future. It seems a perfect tool to provide a positive and enhance learning
experience that is based on mutual knowledge and respect.

Conclusion:
When teachers become more aware of
culturally, teacher employs cultural diversity in the classroom so that it will
be a rich and useful experience to all. Today, it is necessity to include the
cultural component in class because it assists the teacher and student to build
a breeding ground for education. This land depends on the cultural background
of the teacher and the student and respect for the exchange of cultures between
each other.
