Task:

1)    Describe your chosen topic, emphasising the psychological impact to specific individuals or groups.
–    Use your introduction to define key terms, explain the nature of the issue, and explain why your topic is important (i.e. impact of the trauma on individuals or groups)

–    Your introduction should include relevant examples, supporting evidence and information from academic texts or credible sources.

–    Give an indication of how your topic is relevant to the topic of Crisis & Trauma Counselling

e.g. what is the biopsychosocial impact to the individual or group? Are there any societal impacts arising from the trauma? What role could Crisis or Trauma counselling take? Is there any evidence to suggest that specific intervention could assist with the recovery of this individual or group?

2)    Choose an individual or group therapy style — briefly explaining why you chose one approach over the other — and choose a selected theoretical model guiding your chosen therapy style (e.g. Group CBT for Victims of Crime).
–    Lead from your topic’s relevance to Crisis & Trauma Counselling into how a specific therapy style would benefit your individual or group.

–    Discuss why you chose either an individual or group therapy style to treat your client.

e.g., is there any evidence in the literature why one may be better than the other in terms of therapeutic outcomes; cost; time; etc
–    Describe your chosen therapy model/style and discuss its relevance to your crisis/trauma topic.
e.g., Cognitive, Cognitive-Behavioural, Exposure, Narrative, Person-centred, Eclectic, etc.

An example of relevance might be the use of Narrative therapy within Aboriginal communities given similar ceremonial approaches of storytelling

3)    Discuss how the chosen therapy best applies to your chosen trauma situation and individual, providing a justification for your decision (including strengths and limitations). Your discussion should be supported by argument and evidence from academic writing.
–    You do not need to outline how the therapy works, or a step-by-step guide to sessions.

–    You may however, explain how particular elements of the therapy applies to your specific
trauma problem or population, linking back to relevant literature.
e.g. Exposure therapy à re-experiencing rather than avoiding a situation. Why might
such a therapy work with a specific client or population.
Is there evidence in the literature for your therapy being better than another for your individual or group? Why?

–    Are there particular strengths of your chosen therapy/style that enhance the therapeutic outcome with your client/population?

–    Are there any limitations or contraindications with your chosen therapy/style and client/population? e.g.,. is the use of a particular procedure more harmful to the client?
